On May 27, 2016, a flood event caused a catastrophic breach of the Lake Amanda dam. The property owners of Lake Amanda petitioned the Tyler County Commissioners Court to form a water control and improvement district to facilitate the reconstruction of the dam.
The Lake Amanda Water Control and Improvement District #1 (LAWCID) was created and ratified by the voters in the district on November 8th, 2016.
With the help of the Lake Amanda Property Owners Association (LAPOA), the LAWCID was able to hire a consulting engineer to design the new dam and provide oversight to the construction. In June 2017, the LAPOA deeded the dam and lakebed to the LAWCID. The LAWCID leased the lake back to the LAPOA to manage the lake.
The LAWCID secured financing for the rebuilding of the dam in August 2018 and construction began on August 24th, 2018. The new Lake Amanda Dam was completed in the spring of 2019.
